Introduction to Virtual Pigeon Racing

Learn what VPR is, how the game works, and what you can do with digital pigeons: buy, race, breed, and trade.

Virtual Pigeon Racing (VPR) is a blockchain-powered racing game where you can buy, breed, race, collect, and trade digital racing pigeons.

VPR brings the tradition of pigeon racing into a competitive digital format, where outcomes are shaped by a mix of pigeon traits, performance data, and race conditions.

In VPR, you can:

  • Own digital pigeons as NFTs

  • Enter races and compete for rewards

  • Breed pigeons to develop new bloodlines

  • Buy, sell, and trade pigeons through the marketplace

Success in VPR comes from choosing the right pigeons, entering the right races, and developing strong bloodlines over time.

Digital ownership

NFT pigeons

An NFT pigeon is a unique digital pigeon you can own, trade, and use in the game. In VPR, pigeons are described as dynamic NFTs, meaning they can evolve over time through racing and breeding.

Blockchain

A blockchain is a system for recording ownership and activity in a way that is transparent and hard to secretly change. VPR uses blockchain to support verifiable ownership and transparency.

Polygon (POL)

VPR runs on the Polygon (POL) blockchain, chosen for speed, scalability, and low transaction costs.

Good to know: Because pigeons are NFTs, you truly own them. They can be kept, raced, traded, or sold independently of the game interface.

Gameplay mechenics

Once you own pigeons, the game revolves around choosing races, competing live, and steadily improving your birds over time. As you progress, you can earn rewards and decide whether to keep your best pigeons, breed new generations, or list pigeons for sale on the marketplace.

This is the typical flow most players follow:

  1. Buy or own pigeons

  2. Enter races

  3. Improve performance over time

  4. Breed stronger pigeons

  5. Trade or sell valuable birds

Owning and acquiring pigeons

To participate in races you first need to own pigeons. Players can acquire pigeons in several ways.

Generation 1 releases

At the start of the ecosystem, the first Generation 1 pigeons are made available for purchase during official releases. If pigeons are still available, players can buy them through an external NFT marketplace such as OpenSea.

Marketplace purchases

Because pigeons are NFTs, they can also be bought and sold by players on NFT marketplaces. This means pigeons may be listed by individual owners on platforms such as OpenSea or other supported marketplaces.

In-game marketplace

Players can also list pigeons for sale directly on the Virtual Pigeon Racing marketplace, allowing other players in the ecosystem to buy them.

Breeding new pigeons

New pigeons can also be created through breeding, where two pigeons produce offspring with inherited traits.

Racing

Real-time races and conditions

Racing is the heart of Virtual Pigeon Racing. Once you own pigeons, you can enter them into races and compete against other players. Each race tests your pigeon’s abilities under different conditions, and successful races can earn rewards.

Races run live in real time, and outcomes are influenced by factors such as:

  • Weather conditions

  • Race distance

  • Race locations

  • Pigeon traits and genetics

  • Fatigue and endurance

Different race types and conditions mean that not every pigeon performs the same in every race. During races you can follow live telemetry, race progress, and performance statistics.

More detailed guides about race types, weather, locations, and rewards are covered in the racing section of the Help Center.

Pigeons, genetics, and bloodlines

In Virtual Pigeon Racing, a pigeon is more than a collectible. It is a competitor with its own DNA, strengths, and racing potential. The fun comes from learning what your pigeons are good at, picking the right races, and building stronger birds over time.

As your pigeons race, they can evolve through performance and experience. Core attributes like speed, stamina, endurance, and intelligence can improve, and each race becomes part of your pigeon’s permanent history.

Over time, players can also expand their loft by breeding new pigeons and creating new generations based on the traits and pedigrees of the parents.

Generation 1 pigeons

Generation 1 pigeons form the foundation of the VPR ecosystem. They are the first pigeons created directly by the system, with a limited initial supply of 60,000.

These pigeons act as the genetic base for future breeding lines. While new pigeons can be created later through breeding, Generation 1 pigeons remain the original starting population.

Bloodlines, breed types and genotypes

Every pigeon belongs to a bloodline and a breed type. Think of these as part of a pigeon’s background and identity, and as building blocks for collection and breeding strategies.

Bloodlines

Bloodlines represent a pigeon’s major family group within VPR. There are four bloodlines:

  • Hurricane

  • Typhoon

  • Cyclone

  • Tornado

Bloodlines have different characteristics and breeding potential, which can influence how pigeons perform and evolve.

Breed types

Within each bloodline, pigeons also have a breed type. These act like rarity tiers, and each breed type offers different trait combinations and potential outcomes:

  • Silver

  • Emerald

  • Sapphire

  • Gold

  • Platinum

  • Diamond

Strategic breeding across bloodlines and breed types allows players to cultivate new generations with enhanced racing attributes and rare genetic profiles.

Genotypes

Genotypes are genetic markers that represent key traits in a pigeon’s DNA. In Virtual Pigeon Racing, they influence important abilities that affect racing performance, such as endurance and navigation.

Genotype

What it is

Impact on performance

DRD4

A gene linked to dopamine, a brain chemical that influences behaviour and motivation.

Often linked to drive and decision-making in flight. It can affect how a pigeon pushes on and handles race situations.

LDHA

A gene linked to muscle energy use, especially during long effort.

Often linked to stamina and fatigue resistance. It can affect how well a pigeon keeps going over distance.

CRY1

A gene linked to the bird’s internal clock and navigation cues. It is active in the eye.

Often linked to navigation and timing, which can affect staying on course and consistent performance.

Breeding and new generations

Breeding allows players to create new pigeons by pairing two existing pigeons together. The offspring inherits a combination of traits, genetics, and characteristics from its parents. This means that choosing the right parents can lead to stronger or more unique pigeons over time.

Breeding is how the pigeon population grows beyond the original Generation 1 birds. By selecting the right bloodlines, breed types, and genetics, players can develop new generations of pigeons and build their own racing bloodlines.

Breeding in VPR works as follows:

  • Pair two pigeons to create offspring: two compatible pigeons can be paired to produce a new pigeon that inherits traits and genetics from both parents.

  • Genetics influence the result: the offspring’s characteristics depend on the genetics, bloodlines, and breed types of the parent pigeons.

  • Offer your pigeon for breeding: players can make their pigeons available for breeding, allowing other players to breed with them.

  • Earn rewards for breeding: if another player breeds with your pigeon, you can earn a breeding fee or reward for providing the parent pigeon.

More detailed guides about breeding mechanics, requirements, and fees are covered in the Breeding section of the Help Center.

VPR marketplace

The Virtual Pigeon Racing marketplace is where players can buy and sell pigeons.

Because pigeons are NFTs, each pigeon can be listed for sale by its owner. Other players can browse available pigeons, compare their traits and racing history, and purchase them directly.

The marketplace allows players to:

  • List pigeons for sale and set their own price

  • Browse pigeons listed by other players

  • Compare bloodlines, traits, and racing history before buying

  • Build or improve their loft by acquiring new pigeons

Because pigeons are NFTs, they can also be listed on external NFT marketplaces such as OpenSea, depending on where the owner chooses to sell them.

VPR shop

The in-game shop is where players will be able to purchase items that can be used with their pigeons.

Examples of items that may be available in the shop include:

  • Pigeon rings

  • Accessories

  • Other attributes or items related to pigeons

These items are designed to expand the gameplay experience and give players additional ways to customize or develop their pigeons.

Note: The shop will launch later. More information about available items and how the shop works will be added in future updates.
