Race types explained

Learn which race types exist in VPR, how they work, and what makes each format different.

Written by VPR

VPR includes different race formats, each with its own rules and strategic focus. The main formats are One Loft Races and My Loft Races. VPR also includes Twin One Loft Races, a format that connects virtual racing with real-world pigeon racing.

Races can also differ by distance type, such as Sprint, Middle distance, Long distance, and Marathon.

The main race formats

One loft races

In a One Loft Race, all pigeons start from the same point and race toward a single destination.

A simple way to think about it:

  • all pigeons race in the same event setup

  • all pigeons face the same general route conditions

  • the winner is decided by race performance

This format is designed for direct comparison between pigeons.

My loft races

In a My Loft Race, you race from your own loft toward a chosen destination.

This makes the format more personal and more strategic, because route choice, distance, and race conditions can play a bigger role.

A simple way to think about it:

  • you race from your loft to a selected target

  • route and distance can vary

  • strategy becomes a bigger part of the decision

Twin one loft races

Twin One Loft Races are a more advanced format where virtual pigeons race in real time alongside their real-world counterparts. This format is designed to bring digital racing and real pigeon racing closer together.

Note: Availability of this race format may depend on rollout and future feature releases.

Distance-based race types

Besides race format, races also differ by distance. The table below outlines the different distance types.

Distance type

Description

Sprint

Sprint races are shorter races and are built around speed, fast decisions, and quick performance.

Middle distance

Middle distance races sit between short and long races. They usually require a more balanced pigeon profile.

Long distance

Long distance races place more emphasis on sustained performance over time.

Marathon

Marathon races are the longest race type and place the most pressure on endurance, resilience, and overall race suitability.

What makes these race types different

Each race type tests pigeons in a different way.

  • One Loft Races focus on direct comparison

  • My Loft Races add more route and destination strategy

  • Twin One Loft Races connect digital and real-world racing

  • Distance types change what kind of pigeon profile may perform best

That means race choice is part of strategy. The best pigeon for a sprint may not be the best pigeon for a marathon.

What all races have in common

Across VPR, races are shaped by multiple factors, including:

  • distance

  • weather

  • fatigue

  • genetics

  • health

  • race history

So even when the race format changes, choosing the right pigeon remains one of the most important parts of the game.
